Foreign Workers Leave Silicon Valley to Work in Toronto
Toronto’s tech industry is experiencing a prosperous time of growth, more than any city in North America over the past five years.
Experts associate the significant increase to the Canadian government’s policies. As the United States has made it more challenging for top skilled workers to obtain work visas, Canada is moving in the opposite direction. An initiative to help Canadian employers hire international tech talent, the Global Skills Strategy, was started in 2017. Applicants going through the program have increased by five times in the past three years, with over 23,000 employees approved in the top five tech sectors.

US tech firms, such as Netflix, Amazon and Facebook, are expanding their Canadian operations, which adds to the tech field’s boost. Alphabet, the parent company of Google, is adding operations in Canada to get around the US immigration restrictions. Fakhri Karray, a professor from the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Waterloo, said US policymakers are hurting the country by not encouraging qualified engineers to come work in the USA. Cutting the flow of tech industry workers could harm the US tech field in the long run. Countries, like Canada, have benefitted from the clampdown on US immigration, and Karray hopes the trend continues.
